May Mission Action Gift
Memorial Day is on 5/27 and is a day to honor those who lost their lives while serving the country. To honor those Vets, the Ministry Council has decided to send our Mission Action gift for May to Veterans for Peace.
The best way to learn about Veterans for Peace is to read their own Statement of Purpose:
*We, as military veterans, do hereby affirm our greater responsibility to serve the cause of world peace. To this end we will work, with others both nationally and internationally
-To increase public awareness of the causes and costs of war
-To restrain our governments from intervening, overtly and covertly, in the internal affairs of other nations
-To resist racism and repression in our home communities
-To oppose the militarization of law enforcement
-To end the arms race and to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons
-To seek justice for veterans and victims of war
-To abolish war as an instrument of national policy
-To achieve these goals, members of Veterans For Peace pledge to use non-violent means and to maintain an organization that is both democratic and open with the understanding that all members are trusted to act in the best interests of the group for the larger purpose of world peace.
FCC Vallejo has a long history of service particularly back when Mare Island was thriving. While not named in the history book, many members of the congregation worked on Mare Island during WWII and had family members who were killed in the war. We currently have many veterans in our midst and this donation is a way to honor the past and the present.
